About this gauge

VIX (Fear Index)

index · VIXCLS

The VIX (Cboe Volatility Index) estimates the market’s expected 30-day volatility of the S&P 500 from option prices. Higher readings mean participants are pricing in larger moves. Low levels often coincide with calmer markets and high levels with stress, but the index alone is not a trading signal.

Über Market Indicators

The Market Indicators dashboard gathers widely watched market and macro gauges on one screen, with color cues and history charts for quick orientation. Included series: VIX (Cboe volatility), S&P 500, Nasdaq Composite, Dow Jones Industrial Average, Nikkei 225, the U.S. 10Y−2Y Treasury spread, the Fed’s broad trade-weighted dollar index, and London AM gold. Each card shows the latest level, day change, and a tone color; selecting a card opens an ~90-day chart, a short plain-language summary, and links to official sources such as Cboe, FRED, and exchange index pages. Figures come from the St. Louis Fed FRED API as delayed end-of-day observations (or bundled sample series when no API key is configured). This is not live tick data. Content is for education and information only and is not investment or tax advice.

FAQ

Is this real-time data?

No. Values are delayed end-of-day series from FRED, not exchange live quotes. Environments without an API key show bundled sample series.

Can I use this for investment decisions?

It is an educational overview only — not investment advice or a recommendation to buy or sell. Base decisions on official data and your own research or advisors.

What do the VIX colors mean?

As a rough guide: under 15 calm, 15–25 normal, 25–30 elevated, 30+ high stress. These bands are illustrative, not trading signals.

How are the explanations sourced?

Alongside a short in-app summary, each indicator links to official pages (Cboe, FRED, S&P Dow Jones, Nasdaq, Nikkei, U.S. Treasury, Federal Reserve, LBMA). Treat those as authoritative.

What data is sent externally?

Only the toco.tools server requests public series from FRED. We do not collect your portfolio or personal financial inputs for this tool.
