Assumptions and sources

Estimates use Japan's current school system: normally April admission, March graduation, and the first April after completion for the next school. Specify actual dates for exceptions. Time on leave does not always delay graduation by the same amount. Future dates are marked as planned.

Japanese eras are determined by month. If an era changes mid-month, both eras are shown, for example January 1989. Future era dates assume the current era continues.

About School History Calculator (Japan)

When filling in a Japanese resume, it can be difficult to remember school admission and graduation months or their Japanese era equivalents. This tool creates an estimated school history from your birth date and lets you adjust it to your experience. Choose a route through elementary school, junior high, high school, university, junior college, vocational school, or a college of technology. Change course lengths or add schools such as graduate school. Gaps before admission and extra time spent in school are separate adjustments. Enter actual dates when known and distinguish withdrawals and transfers. These are estimates based on Japan's current school system, usually April admission and March graduation, including the April 1 birthday cutoff. The tool does not retrieve school records. All calculation stays in your browser; your birth date and school history are neither stored nor transmitted.

How to use

  1. Enter your birth date and choose a route to see estimated school dates
  2. Adjust each school's gaps, extra time, or actual admission and completion months

FAQ

Does it handle Japan's April 1 birthday cutoff?

Yes. People born from April 2 through the following April 1 belong to the same school cohort. Enter the full birth date, not just the year.

Can I calculate master's and doctoral school dates?

Yes. Choose a route through a master's program or through a master's followed by doctoral study. Defaults are two years for the master's stage and three years for the following doctoral stage, shown separately as completion events. Adjust course lengths and actual months for your program.

How do I account for gaps, repeated years, or leave?

Use a gap before admission or extra time in school. A leave period does not always delay graduation by the same amount, so enter the actual delay or specify the actual completion month.

Can I enter transfers, withdrawals, or a return to education?

Yes. Specify actual admission and completion months, select transfer or withdrawal events, and add schools or change course lengths as needed.

Is my birth date or school history saved?

No. Calculations run in your browser. Inputs are not saved, sent to a server, or added to the URL. Copy any results you need before closing the page.
